Mayor's Message

Dear East Hawkesbury Residents,

Once again, the year 2010 will be a very prosperous year for East Hawkesbury Township. With financial support obtained from the federal and provincial governments, reconstruction of parts of Concession 1 Road is scheduled to be completed this summer. Exciting news! Our new community/emergency centre in the village of Chute-à-Blondeau will be opening this spring. The construction of the building is financed entirely by a grant received from both the provincial and federal governments and the profits from the sale of the former community centre.

We want to encourage everyone to increase the amount of recycling that is being collected in the Township. The Province has set a goal of reducing the waste going to landfill sites by 60%. We have a long way to go to meet the provincial targets. Recycling is important; please help us increase our participation. For your information, electronic items (e.g. old computers, printers, etc.) may now be recycled by dropping them off at “Group Convex / Recycle-Action”, 1588 Aberdeen Street, Hawkesbury. There is no charge for this service. Two dates to remember -- Household hazardous waste collection days will be held on Saturday May 8 and October 2 at the Hawkesbury Municipal Garage , 855 Main Street East, Hawkesbury from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Do you need to get rid of old tires? --- The township is now registered under the Ontario Tire Stewardship Used Tires Program. As in the past, you can still put six (6) tires per year with your regular garbage. If you need to dispose of more tires, or larger size tires, please contact the municipal office to make arrangements.

As you are probably aware, Prescott-Russell will host the 2011 International Plowing Match in our municipality on the Connors/Lachaîne/Kirby farms. Promotional items such as recipe books, mugs, hats, jackets, … are for sale at the municipal office.

The nice weather is coming …. a note to remind every owner of dog(s) that they shall keep their dog (s) on a leash at all times when elsewhere than on their property. Let’s work together for the betterment of our municipality!

2010 is the 125th Anniversary of the Founding of Ste-Anne-de-Prescott. To all the residents of Ste-Anne-de-Prescott, on behalf of myself and the councillors, I wish all of you a memorable year. The largest event of the festivities --- the 125th Anniversary Banquet will be held on August 14. Let’s all celebrate together! For a list of their activities throughout the year, visit www.ste-anne.ca .

On the same note, let’s all celebrate Canada Day on June 30 and July 1 at the St-Eugene Sportsfield!

Finally, if you have any concerns and/or questions I urge you to contact our office (613) 674-2170 or, if you wish, myself at (613) 632-4841. To keep you informed, please visit our website at www.easthawkesbury.ca .

As a reminder, if you need to contact the Township outside of regular business hours for an emergency, please call (613) 632-4111 and your call will be forwarded to the appropriate person. For fire, police and ambulance emergencies you should always dial 9-1-1 for assistance.

Robert Kirby, Mayor
